Request for Self-Nominations for JSR Associate Editor Positions

jsr-logoThe Journal of Surgical Research (JSR) is accepting self-nominations for four editorial leadership positions:

  • Associate Editor for Surgical Oncology – The Journal is seeking applicants with expertise in surgical oncology, particularly surgery related to breast cancer, melanoma, or sarcoma.
  • Associate Editor for Gastrointestinal Surgery – The Journal is seeking applicants with expertise in gastrointestinal surgery, particularly in related clinical and outcomes research.
  • Associate Editor for Healthcare Delivery/Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement – The Journal is seeking applicants with expertise in healthcare delivery, quality assurance, and quality improvement.
  • Associate Editor for Global Surgery– The Journal is seeking applicants with expertise in global surgery.

Associate Editors (AE) for the Journal perform the primary assessment of manuscripts submitted to the Journal and make the determination as to whether manuscripts meet the standard for peer review. If a paper qualifies for peer review, the AEs assign experts in the field of study to review the manuscript. AEs oversee the entire review process by first choosing quality reviewers, then determining the integrity and accuracy of the reviews submitted, and then making a final decision on the status of the manuscript (revise, accept, reject). The AE role is critical to maintaining the integrity of the peer review process and ultimately ensuring a high standard of excellence for the JSR.

Associate Editors handle approximately 3-5 articles per week and meet twice each year (during one teleconference during the summer and at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress in October). The position affords members the opportunity to contribute at a very high level to the quality of the peer-reviewed scientific surgical literature and to join a group of individuals with strong ties and interest in academic surgery. Applicants should have a strong publication record in the peer-review literature; scientific impact is more important than volume. Previous Editorial Board membership experience or significant experience as an ad-hoc reviewer for clinical and/or basic science journals is preferred. Associate Editors are appointed for a 5-year term after which renewal is considered.

Scott A. LeMaire, MD, is the Jimmy and Roberta Howell Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery, the Vice Chair for Research in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, the Director of Research in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Professor of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics at Baylor College of Medicine, as well as a Physician Associate in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Texas Heart Institute and Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in Houston, Texas. Dr. LeMaire is a past-president of the Association for Academic Surgery and is the current editor-in-chief of the Journal of Surgical Research.
