The AAS Ethics Committee Essay & Cover Art Contest

AAS is pleased to present the Ethics Committee’s 2021 Essay and Cover Art Contests. In conjunction with the Journal of Surgical Research, AAS has put together these two contests for our members, and we invite you to participate in two ways:

  1. Submit an essay that answers the question “What is the most challenging ethical issue, personal or professional, you have encountered in the COVID era?”
  2. Submit artwork offering a visual depiction of “the most challenging ethical issue, personal or professional, you have encountered in the COVID era.

The winner of the Essay Contest will receive a cash prize of $1,000 and your essay will appear in the October 2021 issue of JSR.

The winner of the Cover Art Contest will receive a cash prize of $500 and your artwork will appear on the cover of the October 2021 issue of JSR.

Krista Haines, DO MA

Dr. Krista Haines is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Trauma, Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery at Duke University. Dr. Haines has a Master's in Bioethics and Medical Humanities, serves as the Medical Director of Ethics for Duke University Hospital, and Chair of the Hospital Ethics Committee. Her research focuses on geriatrics, ethics, and nutrition, and she is currently an NIH NIA K23 funded scholar, evaluating the impact of trauma on critically ill older adults and their caregivers.
