The AAS Ethics Committee 2022 Essay & Cover Art Contest

AAS is pleased to present our 2022 Essay and Cover Art Contests. In conjunction with the Journal of Surgical Research, the AAS Ethics Committee has put together these two contests for our members, and we invite you to participate in two ways:

  1. Submit an essay that highlights the narrative “Facing Mental Health and Suicide in Surgery.”

This year, the AAS is focusing on mental health and preventing suicide among medical professionals, particularly surgeons. We know that many surgeons struggle with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicidal ideations. While it is hard to talk about our own struggles or the struggles that our friends and colleagues have endured, each story builds the narrative that these experiences are common to surgeons, and that there are ways to prevent, manage and live with mental health stresses.

We are calling for narratives about confronting anxiety, depression, PTSD and suicide in surgery. We will post these narratives as blogs throughout the year on the AAS website, and they will also be highlighted at the ASC, to promote awareness of the issue of mental health disease and suicide among surgeons and clinicians as one of the goals of the ASC meeting this year is to collaboratively identify opportunities for prevention and treatment.

  1. Submit artwork offering a visual depiction of “Art as Therapy.”

What brings you joy during difficult times? Use this inspiration to create art! If drawing, painting or photography is your therapy, share with us a piece that brought you peace or joy.

The winner of the Essay Contest will receive a cash prize of $1,000 and your essay will appear in the Journal of Surgical Research. The winner of the Cover Art Contest will receive a cash prize of $500 and your artwork will appear on the cover of JSR. Additionally, a print of the art will go up for auction to support the AAS Foundation Awards. All entries will be featured in the Academic Surgeon, the blog of the AAS.

Deadline for submission is

Thursday, December 15th, 2022
