AAS is seeking to support nominations for American Board of Surgery (ABS) Council positions. The ABS may select a representative from three nominees to their Council, who must be Diplomats of the ABS and demonstrate high levels of the Council’s desired competencies, to serve a six-year term.
The Council serves as a resource of knowledge, skill, wisdom, and expertise for the organization, and is where issues that cross specialties are discussed. Council members each serve on one of the five ABS specialty boards (General Surgery Board, Vascular Surgery Board, Pediatric Surgery Board, Complex General Surgical Oncology Board, or Trauma Burns and Surgical Critical Care Board) and one or more of the five Council Committees (Assessment Committee, Diplomates and Surgeons in Practice Committee, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, Education and Training Committee, and/or Research Committee). In addition to commitment, availability, loyalty, and ability to keep confidence, individuals with expertise in one or more of the following characteristics are sought:
- Outcome Research Methodologies
- Newer Techniques in Educational Assessment (VBA, AI, Stimulation applications)
- Working with Big Data
- Artificial Intelligence
- Certification of Foreign Trained Surgeons
In addition, ABS is actively seeking surgeons with the following experience:
- Program Director – Primary Certification in either Vascular Surgery or General Surgery (Past or Current)
- Program Director – Fellowship for Subspecialty Training Programs in Pediatric Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, or Complex General Surgical Oncology (Past or Current)
- Community Practice Surgeon

The American Board of Surgery values diversity across all dimensions, including race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age, and any other elements that bring a different voice to the table.
The time commitment including exams is approximately 8 in person days and an additional 8-12 virtual meetings/year for 6 years.
