As a junior faculty member I have chosen to focus on the mental health of surgeons and how mental health and burnout might impact professional development and patient care. I believe that approaching the complicated issues of mental health and burnout on both personal and system levels is vital to our own health and well-being. Improving health and well-being is essential to both personal achievement and satisfaction but also to the sustainability of our profession. I hope to bring these ideas and my active research collaborations to my committee work in the form of innovative projects and multi-disciplinary experts in these fields to contribute to a robust response from academic surgeons that demonstrates compassion and a true commitment toward making our future better than our past.
