I am passionate about improving DEI in surgery, especially as we train the next generation of surgical leaders. I currently work in my home institution to increase awareness of implicit bias, as well as training upstanders to respond to episodes of bias and microaggressions. I  hope to bring these skills to AAS and take the next step serving on a national DEI committee. I feel AAS is a perfect organization to champion improving DEI, as it serves as the premier organization for our academic surgical institutions, which are so involved in training the surgeon leaders of tomorrow.
