The Good, The Bad and the Manuscript Review: Perspectives on Publishing

Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at 6:00-7:00 PM Eastern

Join us for an online session hosted by the AAS Committee for Basic & Translational Science Research and the Committee on Technology and Communications – an interactive, fun, and engaging discussion delving into the world of publishing – the process of researching, writing, and creating published works in academic surgery.

Two of our committee members – Jessica Weaver and Jashodeep Datta – will discuss all aspects of the process of publishing from start to finish on their recently published works:

Jessica L. Weaver, MD PhD – University of California, San Diego
Paper: Association of 30-ft US-Mexico Border Wall in San Diego With Increased Migrant Deaths, Trauma Center Admissions, and Injury Severity

Jashodeep Datta, MD – University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine
Paper: Cell-Autonomous Cxcl1 Sustains Tolerogenic Circuitries and Stromal Inflammation via Neutrophil-Derived TNF in Pancreatic Cancer

    • Developing your idea
    • Asking the right questions
    • Selecting Methodology
    • Data gaps and how to deal with them
    • Reading and taking in papers – breaking down “intimidating” material
    • You’ve written yourself in a corner – now what?
    • Navigating the review process – how to respond
    • Success and Failures in Publishing

The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss:

    • Limitations they identify that the authors didn’t comment on
    • What were the unexpected findings in these papers
