AAS/AASF Fall Courses Award

Application Opens: June 12, 2023
Application Closes: July 10, 2023

Purpose:

This award award is funded by the AAS Foundation, and is awarded to residents, fellows, or faculty-level attendees who by race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or any other personal identification is an underrepresented voice in surgery. This includes but is not limited to:

Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Minority Groups:

  • African American/Black
  • Native American (American Indian, Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian)
  • Hmong, Filipino, Vietnamese, Pacific Islander
  • Hispanic or Latino

Other groups underrepresented in surgery:

  • Women
  • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, Pansexual
  • Active military

The AAS Fall Courses provide pearls of wisdom and a discussion of the advances in research methods, academic career advancement, grant writing, as well as incorporate interactive sessions where participants can discuss their ideas with academic surgical leaders and network with colleagues. This year the Fall Courses will be held October 21, 2023 in Boston, MA.

Applicants submit an essay, along with a letter of support (in PDF format) from their chair, program director, or dean of the medical school (or equivalent). The essay should include a general overview of their academic careers and research history, and include reasons why the applicant would benefit from attending the Fall Courses and what they hope to gain from the experience.

Winner Receives:

  • Complimentary Registration for the Fall Courses
  • $1,000 Travel Stipend
  • Complimentary AAS membership for one year
