AAS Rising Leaders Visiting Professorship

The Association for Academic Surgery (AAS) is thrilled to announce the Rising Leaders Visiting Professorship, a prestigious opportunity generously sponsored by the esteemed Past Presidents Circle. This program aims to foster the development of promising early-career surgical leaders by providing a unique experience to learn from and network with distinguished senior members of the AAS.

This program offers selected rising leaders the chance to spend two days and one night at the institution of a Past President of the AAS. This immersive experience provides invaluable insights into leadership, academic surgery, and institutional culture. The hosting Past President and their institution will cover travel expenses in moderation for the visiting professor.

We are honored to announce the distinguished Past Presidents who will be hosting visiting professors in the coming years:

2025-2026: Dr. Herbert Chen, UAB Medicine
2026-2027: Dr. Timothy Pawlik, The Ohio State University
2027-2028: Dr. Caprice Greenberg, UNC School of Medicine

The AAS is currently accepting applications for the following Visiting Professorship terms:

2025-2026: Applications accepted now, with the Visiting Professorship taking place in 2026.
2026-2027: Applications open in September 2025, with the Visiting Professorship taking place in 2026.
2027-2028: Applications open in March 2026, with the Visiting Professorship taking place in 2027.


Who is Eligible to Apply?

To be eligible for the AAS Rising Leaders Visiting Professorship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a current or former member of the AAS Executive Council
  • AAS Membership must be current and in good standing
  • Must be appointed at academic rank of Assistant or Associate Professor and/or be starting in such a position
