Phillip Hsu

Candidate Member

University of Michigan

General Surgery

As a general surgery resident spending my 2 years of research time working with collaborators in Kigali, Rwanda, I hope to join the Global Affairs committee to enhance the impact of partnerships between AAS, institutions in Rwanda, and global surgery organizations worldwide. If elected, I would use the following partnerships and experiences to fulfill this goal. Through an NIH Fogarty Fellowship and the Harvard PGSSC, I am currently living in Kigali and collaborating with the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) and Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Kigali (CHUK). As we work to develop a program improving triage of pediatric surgical emergencies by general practitioners nationwide, we are gaining experience in building a sustainable solution that will eventually be completely locally run. As a Committee member, I would use these experiences and connections to inform how AAS can best partner with LMIC institutions to develop educational programs that make a lasting, sustainable impact. In addition, as Vice Chair of the RAS-ACS Global Surgery Committee, I would hope to use involvement with the AAS Committee to improve participation and collaboration from both US and LMIC trainees. This participation could be used to improve the equity and bidirectionality of international exchange programs, as well as explore the possibility of having international AAS chapters. I strongly believe that the advancement of global surgery can be rapidly improved by breaking down siloes, and hope to use my position to enhance collaboration to increase the impact of our collective work.
