Surgical Oncology

I am an academic surgical oncologist with a strong side interest in applied moral philosophy. I believe the discipline of surgery, practiced well, requires a strong moral compass, particularly in academics when conflicts of interest are involved. It is critical that we maintain the integrity of our research endeavors without stifling the progress in patient care that can come from industry partnerships. I think it is often a difficult balance to strike due to unconscious bias, however the conflict of interest reporting systems help us to that end.

It would be a passion project for me to serve on the ethics committee. I have been involved with the AAS since I was a medical student, and after a brief hiatus (I was unable to attend during fellowship) I have resumed active membership. I plan to stay involved with the society for the long term and would like to contribute where I can. I continue to work as faculty in a basic/translational lab and believe I could contribute meaningfully to that committee as well. I look forward to upcoming junior faculty programming and the opportunity to mentor resident and student members.
