Statement

Maintaining ethical standards in research is critical for building an accurate and useful body of scientific literature, and maintaining ethical standards in our profession is critical for building the best possible next generation of surgeons and surgical leaders. The legitimacy of medicine in general among the American people has been slowly degraded by a series of ethical lapses reported in the press; we have not always been successful at policing ourselves, in part due to lack of effort. I would be thrilled to be a part of the AAS Ethics Committee so I could help to define and maintain professional standards in our field, especially in an organization which is so critical to surgical trainees.
