I am a pediatric surgeon at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and a co-PI of the SECOND Trial, a national cluster-randomized trial of 212 general surgery programs seeking to improve resident well-being. Our work shows a profound lack of inclusion for minoritized trainees. I believe this lack of inclusion drives our failure to diversify our field. Yet there remain many low-hanging fruit. For example, our data showed that minoritized residents lack meaningful mentorship. Together with this Committee, we created a National Mentorship Network to match residents with faculty at other institutions. The upcoming THIRD Trial will focus on inclusion in departments of surgery. I believe the AAS will lead the house of surgery in advancing DEI, and I hope to continue collaborating with the Committee to reach this goal.
