As an African- American woman and the first physician in my family, the opportunity to become an academic surgeon seemed improbable. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to attend college at Howard University and medical school at Weill Cornell Medical College, prior to starting my general surgery residency at the University of Florida. I am committed to becoming an academic surgical oncologist, and joining the DEI committee for AAS would supplement my development by providing me leadership opportunities in academia, and the opportunity to maintain diverse membership and leadership in this prestigious association.
