To Whom It may Concern,
I have been in academic settings for more than a decade. Currently , I serve a Surgery Vice-Chair of DEI at UNC Chapel Hill.
As part of the LGBTQ+ Community , I am sadly aware of disparities in patient care and access and success to URM individuals in Academia. For the LGBTQ+ Community, the problem is multifactorial and highly related to the social stigma that the LGBTQ+ Status may imply in the general population.
I recently published on the American Surgeon a LGBTQ+ Symposium and I am highly interested in encouraging LGBTQ+ individuals in choosing surgery as career and consider academia. AT UNC, we are in the process of creating affinity groups for LGBTQ+ Faculty and Residents. I have also been organizing several LGBTQ+ Training Modules.
