I am committed to promoting Academic Surgery at the national and international levels. I feel that trainees at all programs need to see academic surgeons forging careers that advance knowledge and patient care for surgeons and surgical patients. We as a society and specifically as the membership committee can do so much to promote knowledge of our society and what we do. We can reach out on social media, to ACGME, and to individual programs at both community and academic residency programs.
Deeply tied with this is the promotion of DEI. By seeking out the underrepresented trainees and finding ways to specifically support them, we will also improve membership. We can demonstrate with action that we are standing by their side, promoting them, and finding way to acknowledge and reduce individual traumas. One example is better faculty training to support minority residents.
