Candidate Member

University of Alabama at Birmingham

General Surgery

I am an MD/PhD-trained post-doctoral research fellow, on academic development time during General Surgery Residency, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. We study molecular mechanisms of treatment resistance, invasion, and metastasis in rectal cancer. In my post-doctoral work, we have demonstrated that exosomes containing ST6GAL1, a maladaptive gene in rectal cancer, spread treatment resistance among cells. An important finding, especially considering incomplete responders to neoadjuvant treatment demonstrate much worse outcomes. Models I am currently using to address this problem include human rectal cancer organoids, human tissue, and an orthotopic needle rectal injection animal model. In order to deliver treatment and study response, we utilize fully integrated small animal imaging and external beam radiation therapy platform. We also leverage extracellular particles called exosomes and synthetic nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery. The work we do is exciting and innovative. I believe that surgeon scientists engaged in basic and translational research are the best because we demonstrate a curiosity about the world around us and leverage our power in our careers to make a difference. I look forward to the opportunity to bring my enthusiasm and love of basic and translational science to this committee. Thank you for your consideration.
