Danny Wang

Candidate Member

Massachusetts General Hospital

General Surgery

I am a general surgery resident and thoracic surgery research fellow at the Massachusetts General Hospital. My research focuses on improving outcomes after lung and esophageal surgery and novel methods for evaluating postoperative recovery and complications. My long-term goal is to become an academic thoracic surgeon specializing in thoracic surgical oncology, leading clinical trials, and advancing resident and fellow training.  I believe my experience and skillset would make me a valuable addition to the Clinical and Health Services Research, Leadership, and Academic Advancement Committees.
During my research years, I gained extensive experience in various aspects of clinical and health services research. I have successfully secured intramural and extramural grant funding for my projects, including the TSF Resident Research Fellowship Award and David J. Sugarbaker Surgical Resident Investigator Award. As the principal investigator and co-founder, I spearheaded the creation of the Multicenter Thoracic Surgery Registry to better understand outcomes after thoracic surgery, evaluate changes in clinical practice, and update guidelines and management recommendations. Currently, I am also leading the recruitment and operation of a prospective clinical trial using wearable technologies to detect complications after cardiothoracic surgery and evaluate functional recovery. Finally, in addition to attending the AAS Fundamentals of Surgical Research course, I have developed critical leadership skills through the ACS Leadership and Advocacy Summit and the AAS Mental Health and Wellbeing Task Force. I am grateful for the opportunity to apply for a committee position and excited to serve and give back to the AAS and its members.
