My career goal is to harness my unique experiences in medical device design, image processing, and vascular surgery to create diagnostic imaging techniques that provide biomechanical data related to cardiovascular disease. I’m developing diagnostic tools that inform patient-specific disease grading based on tissue biomechanics when histologic data cannot be obtained. In my previous research, I used ultrasound to determine biomechanical metrics of the aorta. Non-invasive ultrasound performs poorly in the thoracic region where the majority of aortic disease originate. Magnetic Resonance Elastography performs well in the thorax and can be used to directly measure biomechanical indices of soft tissues. Our lab has begun to collect the first of it's kind mechanical data of the thoracic aorta in aortic dissections. My hope is to bring Translational Bioengineering based research and ideas to the AAS committees if chosen.
