I am a surgical oncologist and health services researcher focused on disparities in access to complex oncologic care. As an Assistant Professor at a safety net hospital that serves the needs of a disadvantaged minority and rural community, I saw how sociodemographic factors affect patient access to quality care. This led me to shift my focus towards health services research. I received a SAAS Junior Faculty Award to attend the AAS/SUS Surgical Investigators' Course, which helped me develop a roadmap for my research goals, grow as a young surgeon-scientist, and mentor residents and medical students. I have successfully obtained extramural funding and have submitted a K23 application. The resources, guidance and mentorship I have received through the AAS and its members have been vital to my career, and I hope to contribute to the AAS by serving on the Clinical and Health Services Research Committee.
