Member Spotlight for January – Kyle Van Arendonk, MD PhD

Each month, the AAS Membership Committee presents the “Member Spotlight” – an opportunity to introduce you to a member of your association.

Kyle Van Arendonk, MD, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Pediatric Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Children’s Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Originally from Iowa, he completed his undergraduate education at Dordt University where he was an NAIA Scholar-Athlete basketball player. After obtaining his medical degree from the University of Iowa Dr. Van Arendonk completed his general surgery residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and his PhD in Clinical Investigation at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He completed his pediatric surgery fellowship at Vanderbilt University before joining the Medical College of Wisconsin as a faculty member in 2018.

Dr. Van Arendonk enjoys practicing the full breadth of pediatric surgery with a special interest in minimally invasive surgery. His research focuses on quality improvement in pediatric surgery and ensuring access to and timely delivery of surgical care for all children. His research has been supported by the Collaborative for Healthcare Delivery Science at the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Central Surgical Association. He is actively involved in a variety of multi-institutional research studies through the Midwest Pediatric Surgery Research Consortium (MWPSC) and the Pediatric Surgical Research Collaborative (PedSRC). He also has an interest in global surgery and has volunteered with the pediatric surgery training program at AIC Kijabe Hospital in Kenya.

Dr. Van Arendonk has been an active member of the AAS since 2018. He currently serves on the AAS Publications Committee and Academic Advancement Committee. He also serves on the Quality and Safety Committee for the American Pediatric Surgical Association and the Delivery of Surgical Care Committee for the American Academy of Pediatrics.
