Congratulations to the new Journal of Surgical Research Associate Editors

Associate Editor for Global Surgery

We are pleased to announce that Benedict C. Nwomeh, MD, MPH, has been selected to serve as the new Associate Editor for the Global Surgery section of the Journal of Surgical Research. Dr. Nwomeh is a Professor of Clinical Surgery and Pediatrics at the Ohio State University College of Medicine and an attending surgeon at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. He has an extensive track record of leadership in global surgery and education, including having served as the inaugural Chair of the Association for Academic Surgery Global Affairs Committee, Co-chair of the Society of University Surgeons Committee on Global Academic Surgery, and founding Course Director of multiple clinical, research, and career development courses conducted throughout western Africa. Dr. Nwomeh is a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, and a member of the World Health Organization Global Initiative for Emergency and Essential Surgical Care, the Pan-African Pediatric Surgery Association, the Society of International Humanitarian Surgery, the Association of Pediatric Surgeons of Nigeria, and the International Pediatric Endo-surgery Group.

Associate Editor for Healthcare Delivery/Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement

We are pleased to announce that Nader N. Massarweh, MD, MPH, has been selected to serve as the new Associate Editor for the Healthcare Delivery/Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement section of the Journal of Surgical Research. Dr. Massarweh is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. He has an extensive track record in evaluating quality improvement programs and health policy initiatives, and serves as a member of an American College of Surgeons Health Policy Committee and the American College of Surgeons Alternative Payment Model Task Force. He has also served as a member of the JSR Editorial Board.

Associate Editor for Gastrointestinal Surgery

We are pleased to announce that Amir A. Ghaferi, MD, MS, has been selected to serve as the new Associate Editor for the Gastrointestinal Surgery section of the Journal of Surgical Research (JSR); he will be joining our current Associate Editors for this section, Dr. Gregory Kennedy and Dr. Jose Trevino. Dr. Ghaferi is an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Business at the University of Michigan, Chief of General Surgery and Director of Bariatric Surgery at the Ann Arbor Veterans Administration Healthcare System, and Director of the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative. He is also currently serving on the JSR editorial leadership as Co-chair of the Association for Academic Surgery Publications Committee. Dr. Ghaferi has an extensive track record in health services, quality, and safety research; funding from PCORI and AHCRQ; and expertise in advanced laparoscopy, including gastroesophageal reflux surgery, bariatric surgery, and abdominal wall and groin hernia repairs.

Associate Editor for Surgical Oncology

We are pleased to announce that Kazuaki Takabe, MD, PhD, has been selected to serve as the new Associate Editor for the Surgical Oncology section of the Journal of Surgical Research; he will be replacing Dr. Herb Chen, for whose dedicated service we are extremely grateful. Dr. Takabe is a Professor of Oncology and the Alfiero Foundation Chair and Clinical Chief of Breast Surgery at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology at University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. He is also an Affiliate Professor at Yokohama City University School of Medicine and Tokyo Medical University School of Medicine in Japan. Dr. Takabe has deep expertise in both cancer biology and clinical trials, with active funding as principal investigator from the NIH and Susan G. Komen. He has served on several Association for Academic Surgery committees, including the Publication Committee.

Scott A. LeMaire, MD, is the Jimmy and Roberta Howell Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery, the Vice Chair for Research in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, the Director of Research in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Professor of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics at Baylor College of Medicine, as well as a Physician Associate in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Texas Heart Institute and Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in Houston, Texas. Dr. LeMaire is a past-president of the Association for Academic Surgery and is the current editor-in-chief of the Journal of Surgical Research.
