Apply Now for AAS Fellowships and Travel Grants – deadline August 15th

The Association for Academic Surgery has extended the application deadline for the following awards – take advantage of these funding opportunities:

For Residents and Fellows: The AAS/AASF Research Fellowship Awards provide residents and fellows with a year-long funded research position. For each of the awards, the funding year begins July 1, 2017. Three awards are available:

The AAS/AASF Global Surgery Research Fellowship Award –  This award is designed for individuals who are interested in advancing the field of Global Surgery through research. The award is $10,000 for one year.

The AAS/AASF Trainee Research Fellowship Award – Basic Science/Translational Research – This award is for residents and fellows engaged in basic science or translational research. The Award is $20,000 for one year.

The AAS/AASF Trainee Research Fellowship Award – Clinical Outcomes/Health Services/Educational Research – This award provides an eligible resident or fellow the opportunity to spend a year in a full-time clinical, educational or health services research position with an AAS member. The Award is $20,000 for one year.

For Medical Students:

Travel Awards for the 2017 ASC – The AAS offers several travel awards each year to support student & resident attendance at the Academic Surgical Congress. A total of nine (9) awards are available for the 2017 ASC – click the links below for more information:

The AAS/AASF Senior Medical Student Travel Award – 6 Awards – For graduating senior medical students who are interested in in pursuing a career in academic surgery, these awards recognize outstanding research efforts. Three (3) awards are given for basic science/translational research and three (3) for clinical/outcomes/health services/education research The award is complimentary registration plus a $500 travel stipend for the Academic Surgical Congress held in Las Vegas, Nevada, February 7-9, 2017.

AAS/AASF Student Diversity Travel Grant – 3 awards – These three (3) awards are presented to female or underrepresented minority medical students. The award is complimentary registration, 3-nights hotel accommodations and a $500 travel stipend for the Academic Surgical Congress held in Las Vegas, Nevada, February 7-9, 2017.

For Faculty

AAS Joel J. Roslyn MD Faculty Research Award – This award is supported by the  Journal of Surgical Research and its publisher, Elsevier Science. Its intent is to provide a faculty member with one year of support for surgical research. The Award provides $50,000 for one year, expended solely for the purpose of the sponsored research; funding begins March 1, 2017.

Application is open to eligible faculty members who are within five years of completion of surgical training; applicants must be active members of the AAS who have not received a previous career development award.

AAS International Visiting Professorship Awards – The intent of these awards is to encourage the exchange of ideas and information about clinical, scientific and policy aspects of surgery between members of the AAS and international societies. The award covers travel support to these organization’s meetings. Additionally, recipients will participate in hosting representatives from these organizations at the next Academic Surgical Congress, to be held in Las Vegas February 7-9, 2017. Take advantage of this opportunity to attend one of four international conferences presented by renowned surgical associations around the world:

  • The West African College of Surgeons
  • The Taiwan Surgical Association
  • The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
  • The Colombian Surgical Association

Webmaster at Association for Academic Surgery
The Association for Academic Surgery was founded in 1967 and has grown significantly over the years being widely recognized as an inclusive surgical organization with over 2,500 member surgeons. Active members have traditionally held faculty appointments at a recognized academic center. Active membership is also available to senior/chief residents and fellows in approved training programs in general surgery and the surgical specialties. The impetus of the membership remains research-based academic surgery.
