AAS/AASF Awards – Applications for 2017-2018 Open Today

The Association for Academic Surgery and the AAS Foundation offer several travel grants and research awards each year. The application process for the 2017-2018 grants and awards is now open:

OPEN TO RESIDENTS, FELLOWS & FACULTY

AAS Fall Courses Travel Grant

Six travel grants are awarded to resident, fellow, or faculty-level attendees who are female and/or from under-represented minorities. The AAS Fall Courses will provide participants opportunities to discuss advances in research methods, academic career advancement and grant writing, plus networking sessions where participants can interact with academic surgical leaders. The Award goes toward participation in the 2017 Fall Courses held October 21, 2017 in San Diego, California. Click HERE to submit your application.

OPEN TO FACULTY

Joel J. Roslyn MD Faculty Research Award

The intent of this award is to provide an eligible faculty member who is within five years of completion of surgical training with one year of support for surgical research. The applicant must be an active member of the AAS who has not received a previous career development award. The Award is $50,000 for one year, expended solely for the purpose of the sponsored research; funding begins March 1, 2018. Click HERE to submit your application.

OPEN TO RESIDENTS & FELLOWS ENGAGED IN FULL-TIME RESEARCH

AAS/AASF Global Surgery Research Fellowship Award

This award is designed for individuals who are interested in advancing the field of Global Surgery through research, including but not limited to: proposals aimed at further defining or reducing the global burden of surgical disease; defining existing human and material resources available for surgical care in low- or middle-income countries; outlining the ability of surgical treatment to prevent death and disability in resource-poor settings; identifying strategies for instituting or improving surgical care or capacity in resource-poor settings; preventative interventions for surgical disease; and advancing surgical education or manpower in areas of limited resources. The Award is $10,000 for one year, expended solely for the purpose of the sponsored research; funding begins July 1, 2018. Click HERE to submit your application.

 AAS/AASF Trainee Research Fellowship Award –Basic Science/Translational Research

This award is for residents and fellows engaged in basic science or translational research. The applicant must be currently enrolled in an accredited training program and have completed at least two years of postgraduate training in a surgical discipline. The applicant must be a candidate member or active member of the AAS, and at least one mentor must be an active or senior member of the AAS. The Award is $20,000 for one year, expended solely for the purpose of the sponsored research; funding begins July 1, 2018. Click HERE to submit your application.

AAS/AASF Trainee Research Fellowship Award – Clinical Outcomes/Health Services/Education Research

The intent of this award is to provide an eligible resident or fellow the opportunity to spend a year in a full-time clinical, educational or health services research position with an AAS member. The award is for residents and fellows engaged in clinical, educational or health services research. The applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited training program and have completed at least two years of postgraduate training in a surgical discipline. The applicant must be a candidate member or active member of the AAS, and at least one mentor must be an active or senior member of the AAS. The Award is $20,000 for one year, expended solely for the purpose of the sponsored research; funding begins July 1, 2018. Click HERE to submit your application.

STUDENT AWARDS

AAS/AASF Senior Medical Student Travel Award

The intent of these six (6) awards (3 for basic science/translational research and 3 for clinical/outcomes/health services/education research projects) is to recognize outstanding research efforts by medical students and to encourage student interest in pursuing careers in academic surgery. The candidate must be a graduating senior medical student, receiving his/her medical degree between January and July 2017 and should be considering a career in academic surgery. The Award is complimentary registration plus a $500 travel stipend for the Academic Surgical Congress held in Jacksonville, Florida, January 30 – February 1, 2018. AAS/AASF Student Diversity Travel Grant

These three (3) awards are presented to female or underrepresented minority medical students. Department chairs and clerkship directors should encourage eligible medical students to apply for this unique opportunity to attend the premier meeting in academic surgery. The Award is complimentary registration, 3-nights hotel accommodations and a $500 travel stipend for the Academic Surgical Congress held in Jacksonville, Florida, January 30 – February 1, 2018. OPEN TO ALL AAS MEMBERS

AAS International Visiting Professorship Awards

The intent of these awards is to encourage the exchange of ideas and information about clinical, scientific and policy aspects of surgery between members of the AAS and international societies. The AAS has formal exchanges with the Taiwan Surgical Association, the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Younger Fellows Committee, the West African College of Surgeons and the Colombian Surgical Association. These exchanges are open to all AAS members and applicants must have a strong history of participation in the AAS, a record of significant accomplishment in any aspect of surgical research and a current full-time academic appointment. The Award is travel support for these organization’s respective meetings, with the opportunity to present there; recipients will also host international visitors to the 2017 Academic Surgical Congress held in Jacksonville, Florida, January 30 – February 1, 2018. Webmaster at Association for Academic Surgery
The Association for Academic Surgery was founded in 1967 and has grown significantly over the years being widely recognized as an inclusive surgical organization with over 2,500 member surgeons. Active members have traditionally held faculty appointments at a recognized academic center. Active membership is also available to senior/chief residents and fellows in approved training programs in general surgery and the surgical specialties. The impetus of the membership remains research-based academic surgery.
