AAS Member Spotlight for July 2021 – Danielle Sutzko, MD MS

Dr. Danielle Sutzko is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She also serves as the Associate Program Director for the Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency and is an Associate Scientist in the Comprehensive Cardiovascular Center. She received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida, graduating with a degree in microbiology and cell science. She earned her medical degree from the University of South Florida, graduating Alpha Omega Alpha. She then completed her vascular surgery residency training at the University of Michigan where she also completed a post-doctoral health services research fellowship at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation under a National Heart and Lung & Blood Institute T32 grant under Dr. Nicholas Osborne.

Since joining faculty at UAB in 2019, she has been working Dr. Jayme E. Locke, professor and director of transplantation, to establish her research focusing on patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) who also have end-stage renal disease (ESRD). She was awarded a VA research development award to investigate disparities in vascular care in this patient population in 2020 and also was a 2020-2021 RCMAR scholar recipient for the health disparities research education program. She also serves as a co-leader for the UAB Surgical Grand Rounds committee and helps lead the vascular surgery simulation curriculum for the vascular surgery and general surgery program. In 2021, Dr. Sutzko was awarded the John W. Kirklin Award in the Department of Surgery which recognizes faculty members who exemplify the culture of UAB Surgery through enthusiastic engagement in academic surgery. Dr. Sutzko has been an Association of Academic Surgery (AAS) member since 2020 and is currently on the AAS Clinical & Health Services Research Committee.
