The Association for Academic Surgery would like to congratulate our Fall Courses Travel Grant recipients! Grant winners receive complimentary registration and a travel stipend to attend the AAS Fall Courses, taking place in Washington DC on Saturday, October 15, 2016.
The 2016 Travel Grant recipients are:
Eliza Beal is a PGY-4 general surgery resident at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, OH. Her basic science research interests include ischemia-reperfusion injury and ex-vivo organ perfusion for transplantation. Her clinical research interests include transplantation and hepatobiliary malignancy outcomes research. She is interested in liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery and plans to pursue fellowship in these areas.
Ina Chen is a PGY-2 general surgery resident training at Washington University in St. Louis. She is interested in pursuing a career in academic medicine dedicated to finding targeted treatments for cancer patients. In her free time, she likes to do yoga, spend time with her fiancé and cat, and eat.
Vanessa Msosa is a Malawian general surgery resident training under The College of East, Central & Southern Africa (COSECSA) since 2012. She enjoys working with a positive attitude and has excellent interpersonal skills with respect for diversity.She hopes to contribute a great deal to improvement of surgical care in her setup.
Amanda Pugh is currently completing her general surgery residency at University of Cincinnati Medical Center. She is from a small rural town in North Carolina and graduated medical school from the Brody School of Medicine. She considers herself very fortunate for this opportunity and look forward to a future as an academic surgeon.
Eric Rosenfeld received his medical degree from SUNY Downstate COM in 2014. Amid his training in the Larson Lab at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, he developed a fascination for research and subsequently joined the academic track at Baylor College of Medicine where he is currently a General Surgery Resident.
Brandi Scully is a fourth-year general surgery resident in the Michael E. DeBakey department of surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. She has been conducting research in congenital heart surgery at Texas Children’s Hospital under Drs. Charles Fraser and Jeffrey Heinle since 2004. Her research interests include pediatric heart and lung transplantation outcomes, mechanical assist devices, and bioengineering of cardiovascular tissues.
Laura Veras graduated from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and has completed two years of General Surgery residency at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. She is the current Pediatric Surgery Clinical Research Fellow at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN.
