The AAS and AAS Foundation sponsor several travel, research and presentation awards in conjunction with the annual Academic Surgical Congress. For the 2015 ASC, the following awards were announced and presented during the awards ceremony:
Global Surgery Research Fellowship Award – this award is designed for individuals who are interested in advancing the field of Global Surgery. The award is a one-year $10,000 research grant: Benjamin Martin, Emory University: “Promoting Minimally Invasive Surgery in Developing Countries”
AAS/AASF Research Fellowship Awards – these awards provide an eligible resident or fellow who has completed at least two years of postgraduate training the opportunity of a full-time research position with an AAS member. The award is a one-year $20,000 research grant:
For Basic Science/Translational Research: James Butler, Indiana University: “Improving Transgene Expression on Porcine Endothelium Through Identification of Endogenous Promoters: A Strategy to Drive Human Complement Regulatory Proteins”
For Clinical Outcomes/Education Research/Health Services: Christina Papageorge, University of Wisconsin: “Preoperative Tamsulosin for the Prevention of Postoperative Urinary Retention: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial”
Joel J. Roslyn Faculty Research Award – this award provides early-career research support to junior faculty members of the AAS. The award is a one-year $40,000 research grant: Benjamin Levi, University of Michigan: “Targeting Heterotopic Ossification Induced Joint Contractures Before They Occur Through Early Detection and Angiogenic Inhibition”
STUDENT AWARDS
AAS/AASF Student Research Awards – this award recognizes outstanding research efforts by medical students, and recipients were awarded complimentary registration to the 2015 ASC plus a travel stipend:

INTERNATIONAL AWARDS
ASC International Research Travel Awards – this award supports the growing participation in the ASC by international participants, and recipients were awarded complimentary registration to the 2015 ASC and a travel stipend:

International Visiting Professorship Awards – these awards endeavor to encourage the exchange of surgical ideas between AAS members and members of international surgical societies; recipients are given the opportunity to participate in the annual meeting of the hosting surgical society, and can involve hands-on clinical and scientific work in the host country:
