2023 AAS Councilor Elections: Class of 2019

AAS COUNCILOR ELECTIONS: COUNCILOR MEMBER TO REPRESENT THE 2019 YEAR-OF-ENTRY GROUP

Each year, one Council member is elected for a two-year term for each year-of-entry group. This year’s elections consist of  2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021 year-of-entry groups. Please vote for one candidate below by Monday, August 15, 2022 at 11:59pm PST so that we may complete this important election and notify you of your elected representative. Please use your Council member to convey your ideas and concerns to the Executive Council.

Name – Joel Adler

Institution – Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin

Statement of Interest – I have been a member of the AAS since I was a second year medical student in 2007, and I have benefitted immensely from the mentorship and professional connections throughout my training and career. I have served on the publications committee for the past three years, and have had the privilege of moderating multiple sessions, including the medical student competition, at the last three Academic Surgical Congresses. As councilor, I would work (1) to increase participation of the less represented surgical specialties (including transplant surgeons such as myself), and (2) to increase the mentorship and resources for young surgeon-scientists.

Institution – Medical College of Wisconsin

Statement of Interest – The AAS and the Academic Surgical Congress have been instrumental in the beginning stages of my career. The camaraderie, support, and programs the AAS provides, not only to trainees, but also to faculty at all stages in their careers is invaluable. I would appreciate the privilege to serve the organization as an AAS Councilor.

Institution – University of Minnesota

Statement of Interest – Joining the Association for Academic Surgery during my training was one of the best decisions that I have made for my development as an academic surgeon. The AAS has afforded me the opportunity to present my research at the Academic Surgical Congress, participate in the organization through serving on the Membership Committee, and establish new mentors through the AAS/SUS Basic-Translational Research Mentoring Program. I would love the opportunity to give back to the organization through service as a Councilor to continue to promote the development of surgical trainees and junior faculty members.
