Katherine McElroy, Candidate Member
General Surgery, Surgical Oncology
University of Alabama at Birmingham
I am a PGY3 currently in academic development time at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I have dedicated the next two years as an NIH T32 post-doctoral fellow in Surgical Oncology studying health disparities in pancreatic and breast tumors. Our focus is to mitigate health disparities for communities of color by identifying the factors contributing to worse clinical outcomes. With the overarching goal of increasing quality care for underserved populations, I am eager to serve on the DEI Committee and drive AAS initiatives that create a better way forward for inclusion, promotion in surgery, and increased quality care for our growing diverse population. Given my history in mentorship and restructuring institutions to create inclusive cultures, I am excited to build upon these efforts in parallel with the values and trajectory of AAS and the greater surgical specialty.
