Thomas Diehl, Candidate Member
University of Wisconsin
I am a general surgery resident at the University of Wisconsin and Fogarty Global Health Fellow working to improve surgical outcomes in LMICs. My current work is on neonatal surgical outcomes in Kigali, Rwanda, and I have previous experience in the Republic of Congo and DRC. I hope to become a leader in academic global surgery, specifically supporting training programs to generate sustainable surgical/research capacity and leveraging mobile technologies to improve surgical outcomes in low-resource settings. As a candidate member on the Global Affairs Committee, I hope to learn from current leaders in the field about building international partnerships and developing research courses. I believe that through my global surgery research experiences in several high- and low-income settings, leadership within the Association for Academic Global Surgery, and active engagement with the UW Global Surgery Committee, I am well-positioned to represent the interests of trainees on the AAS Global Affairs Committee.
