Dear Colleague:
The time is coming near for all of us to start thinking about the 6th Annual Academic Surgical Congress (ASC). The Society of University Surgeons (SUS) and the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS) jointly hosted the successful 5th Annual ASC in San Antonio, Texas. We continue to have increasing participation with another record number of attendees. The ASC has become the most important meeting of the year for clinical and basic surgical sciences. The 6th Annual ASC will take place from February 1-3, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency in Huntington Beach, California. The AAS and SUS expect even greater participation and encourage all members to participate in the growth of academic surgery.
The joint website for electronic abstract submissions will be open from June 25, 2010 until August 16, 2010. The ASC is an exciting venue to hear and discuss the latest scientific advances in all disciplines pertinent to academic surgery. The breadth of work being presented includes topics in education, clinical outcomes, health services research, as well as the basic sciences. We would also like to remind all members to encourage all of their colleagues at their home institutions to submit their work for presentation.
Abstracts will be considered for presentation in full or quickshot oral format. Full oral talks will consist of a 10-minute presentation followed by 5 minutes of discussion. The quickshot talks consist of a 3 minutes oral presentation, 5 slides maximum, and 2 minutes of discussion. Similar to prior ASC meetings, we will also have the AAS Plenary and SUS Plenary sessions, which will highlight the best research being submitted.
All members to the SUS who were newly elected at the 2010 SUS Business Meeting are expected to submit an abstract for presentation as part of the requirements to become a fully active member. New members have the choice of submitting the abstract to be considered for presentation with the other ASC submissions or simply submit it for the SUS new members poster session. However, SUS new members are expected to submit and present at the poster session regardless of whether the abstract is chosen for oral presentation at one of the ASC sessions. The New Members’ Poster Session is moderated by the leadership of the SUS and represents a format for the new members to introduce themselves and their work to the SUS leadership.
We encourage everyone to visit the ASC website to get information on the 2011 meeting in Huntington Beach. In the future, you will find links to the abstract submission site, information about meeting and hotel registration, and full abstracts of all accepted abstracts for you to download.

As they become available, we will post presentations from past AAS meetings and courses here. Presentations may include powerpoint, audio, and video (hopefully all three) but depending on the quality of the recording, one or more of the above may have to be left off.
