COURSE OBJECTIVES
21th ANNUAL FUNDAMENTALS OF SURGICAL RESEARCH COURSE
At the Conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the key activities of a successful surgeon scientist
  • Describe the essential points in a scientific abstract, paper, and research application
  • Differentiate between outcomes, clinical, and education research
  • Describe the new molecular strategies that can be applied towards surgical research
  • Map out a strategy for achieving balance in both work and home life

6TH ANNUAL CAREER DEVELOPMENT COURSE
At the Conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Discover the excitement and opportunities of being an academic surgeon
  • Develop a strategy for balancing clinical and academic responsibilities
  • Critically evaluate an offer for an academic position
  • Identify appropriate mentors for each aspect of their academic career
  • Design an effective strategy for getting promoted
  • Understand what opportunities there are in basic science, translational, and outcomes research
  • Get started in writing a grant proposal such as a career development grant
  • Recognize the opportunities in surgical education
  • Develop a strategy for balancing personal and professional time
  • Understand the importance of maintaining personal health
  • Share in developing the vision for the future academic surgeon

ACCREDITATION STATEMENT

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Academic Surgery. The American College Surgeons is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American College of Surgeons designates this educational activity for a maximum of 16* AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
