2012 AAS/Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Younger Fellows Committee Leadership Exchange

Deadline for Applications: September 12, 2011

Call for Applications for the 2012 AAS/Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Younger Fellows Committee Leadership Exchange

The AAS and the Younger Fellows Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) are pleased to announce the 2012 Leadership Exchange. The purpose of this award is to encourage the exchange of ideas and information about clinical, scientific and policy aspects of surgery between members of the AAS and members of the RACS.

The recipient of the 5th annual AAS/RACS International Visiting Professorship Award will receive support to travel to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to attend the RACS Younger Fellows Forum on May 3-5, the fourth annual Developing a Career in Academic Surgery Course on May 6, and the RACS Annual Scientific Congress on May 7-10, 2012. The Exchange is made possible, in part, by the generous support that the Younger Fellows Committee has obtained from Johnson & Johnson Medical.

The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Younger Fellows Committee
RACS Fellows who are within their first 10 years of fellowship are considered 'younger fellows;" the RACS Younger Fellows Committee serves their interests and assures representation within the College. Each year, the Younger Fellows Forum is convened by the RACS Younger Fellows Committee immediately before the RACS Annual Scientific Congress. The purpose of the Younger Fellows Forum is to discuss policy issues of particular relevance to young surgeons―such as those related to training, certification, industry relations, etc.―and ultimately to generate a series of specific recommendations that are brought to the RACS Council, thereby ensuring that young surgeons in ANZ have a voice in the RACS.

The Leadership Exchange
The Younger Fellows Committee and the AAS developed the Leadership Exchange in order to foster an international alliance involving the future leaders in surgery. The primary focus of the visit will be to participate in discussions concerning important policy issues with young surgeons in the RACS.

The recipient may be asked to give presentations at the Younger Fellows Forum, the Developing a Career in Academic Surgery Course, and the Annual Scientific Congress.

The recipient must be willing to assist in hosting the Leadership Exchange visitor from the RACS Younger Fellows Committee, who will be attending the Academic Surgical Congress in Las Vegas, Nevada, in February 2012.

Requirements
This award is available to active members of the AAS who meet the following requirements:

  • A strong history of participation in the AAS
  • A record of significant accomplishment in any aspect of surgical research
  • A current full-time academic appointment

Submission of Applications
Members who wish to apply for this award should submit a letter of interest and an NIH biosketch to Christina Kasendorf, the Executive Director of the AAS (christina@aasurg.org). The deadline for RECEIPT of applications is 11:59 pm PST on September 12, 2011. Within the letter of interest, applicants should express why they would like to participate in the Leadership Exchange, as well as what they hope to achieve during the visit. Applicants should also summarize their history of service in the AAS. Letters should not exceed 2 pages in length.

Congratulations to Carmen Solorzano, MD, the winner of the 2011 AAS/Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Younger Fellows Committee Leadership Exchange.
