AAS Foundation Research Fellowship Award

Deadline for Applications: September 8, 2011

Awarded every year

Purpose:
The AAS began giving Research Fellowship Awards in 1988 with the goal of providing the necessary support to enable residents and fellows to spend two years in full-time basic or clinical research under the mentorship of an AAS member. The award is given to the surgical resident or fellow whose research proposal is judged to be the most outstanding by the AAS Executive Council.

Until recently, the awards were made possible through the generous support of several corporate sponsors, including Astra Zeneca, Bayer Pharmaceutical, Inc., Ethicon, Inc., Karl Storz Endoscopy, and United States Surgical Corporation. In 2008, the AAS Foundation committed to supporting future Research Fellowship Awards; the Foundation gave its first award at the Academic Surgical Congress in 2009. In recognition of their strong support and commitment to the development of young academic surgeons, the award has been renamed the AAS Foundation Research Fellowship Award.

Eligibility/Application:

  • Applicants must be residents or fellows who are currently enrolled in an accredited training program and have completed at least two years of postgraduate training in a surgical discipline
  • The awardee must be a candidate member or an active member of the AAS
  • There must be at least one mentor who is an active or senior member of the AAS
  • Applicants must submit an application form, their curriculum vitae, and a NIH-style biosketch for the sponsoring AAS mentor
  • The research proposal must include a lay summary of the project, a comprehensive research plan, and documentation of institutional approval
  • Letters of support are required from the sponsoring AAS mentor and the applicant’s department chair. The letter from the department chair must indicate that the applicant will spend the entire two-year funding period in the research fellowship.
  • The deadline for RECEIPT of applications is 11:59 pm PST on September 8, 2011
  • Finalists for the award will be invited to interview with the selection committee at the 2012 Academic Surgical Congress
Final recipients of the award will be asked to submit progress reports, and may be invited to present the work at the Academic Surgical Congress.

Winner Receives:

  • $20,000 per year for two years to be used for salary support and/or direct-cost expenditures incurred in the conduct of the proposed research project
  • Award certificate presented at the AAS Awards Session during the Academic Surgical Congress
  • Name published in the AAS newsletter and in the program of the Academic Surgical Congress
