Call for Applications for the 2011 AAS/Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Younger Fellows Committee Leadership Exchange
The AAS and the of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) are pleased to announce the 2011 Leadership Exchange. The purpose of this award is to encourage the exchange of ideas and information about clinical, scientific and policy aspects of surgery between members of the AAS and members of the RACS.
The recipient of the third annual AAS/RACS International Visiting Professorship Award will receive support to travel to Adelaide, Australia, to attend the RACS Younger Fellows Forum on on May 2, and the RACS Annual Scientific Congress on May 3-6, 2011. The Exchange is made possible, in part, by the generous support that the Younger Fellows Committee has obtained from Johnson & Johnson Medical.
The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Younger Fellows Committee
RACS Fellows who are within their first 10 years of fellowship are considered “younger fellows;” the RACS Younger Fellows Committee serves their interests and assures representation within the College. Each year, the Younger Fellows Forum is convened by the RACS Younger Fellows Committee immediately before the RACS Annual Scientific Congress. The purpose of the Younger Fellows Forum is to discuss policy issues of particular relevance to young surgeons―such as those related to training, certification, industry relations, etc.―and ultimately to generate a series of specific recommendations that are brought to the RACS Council, thereby ensuring that young surgeons in ANZ have a voice in the RACS.
The Leadership Exchange
The Younger Fellows Committee and the AAS developed the Leadership Exchange in order to foster an international alliance involving the future leaders in surgery. The primary focus of the visit will be to participate in discussions concerning important policy issues with young surgeons in the RACS.
The recipient may be asked to give presentations at the Younger Fellows Forum, the Developing a Career in Academic Surgery Course, and the Annual Scientific Congress.
The recipient must be willing to assist in hosting the Leadership Exchange visitor from the RACS Younger Fellows Committee, who will be attending the Academic Surgical Congress in Huntington Beach, California, in February 2011.

Purpose:
The AAS began giving Research Fellowship Awards in 1988 with the goal of providing the necessary support to enable residents and fellows to spend two years in full-time basic or clinical research under the mentorship of an AAS member. The award is given to the surgical resident or fellow whose research proposal is judged to be the most outstanding by the AAS Executive Council.
Until recently, the awards were made possible through the generous support of several corporate sponsors, including Astra Zeneca, Bayer Pharmaceutical, Inc., Ethicon, Inc., Karl Storz Endoscopy, and United States Surgical Corporation. In 2008, the AAS Foundation committed to supporting future Research Fellowship Awards; the Foundation gave its first award at the Academic Surgical Congress in 2009.
